The Great Swiss Battle: Which City Will Host Eurovision 2025?

Switzerland is gearing up to host the Eurovision Song Contest 2025, with four cities – Geneva, Basel, Zurich, and Bern – vying for the honour. Each city offers unique advantages, making the final decision, due in August, an intriguing one.
Bern and Biel: A Joint Bid with Heart
After a brief social media misunderstanding, Bern has confirmed its strong commitment to hosting Eurovision, potentially in partnership with Biel. The proposed venue, the Neue Festhalle in Bern, is currently under construction but is expected to open in March 2025 with a capacity of 9,000. Despite its small airport and limited hotel capacity, Bern’s charm and ambition shine through.
Mayor Alec von Graffenried envisions a more intimate and heartfelt event, stating, «Our version of Eurovision will be a refined affair, focusing on quality, heart, and sustainability.»
Basel: Creative Hub Ready for Action
Basel, famous for events like Art Basel and Fasnacht, is pulling out all the stops. The city has engaged the communications agency Farner to bolster its bid. The St. Jakobshalle, with its 12,000 seats, is Basel’s proposed venue. Basel’s strategic location at the tri-national border and its vibrant party culture make it a compelling choice.
Government spokesman Marco Geiner is enthusiastic about the bid, saying, «Hosting Eurovision would be a tremendous honour for Basel, showcasing our city’s creativity and energy.»
Geneva: The International Contender
Geneva, home to the EBU and the birthplace of the International Radio Union, offers a prestigious setting for Eurovision. The Palexpo, which can host 15,000 attendees, is Geneva’s proposed venue. With its strategic location near the French border, ample accommodation options, and an international airport, Geneva stands out despite its quieter nightlife.
Geneva’s cosmopolitan flair and historical significance in broadcasting make it a strong contender for the event.
Zurich: The Cosmopolitan Favourite
Zurich, Switzerland’s largest city and a global financial hub, is presenting a robust bid. The city’s proposal includes the Hallenstadion (15,000 seats) and the Swiss Life Arena (12,000 seats). Zurich boasts the busiest airport and train station in the country, and a wealth of hotels, clubs, and bars.
Mayor Corine Mauch highlights Zurich’s vibrant culture, stating, «Zurich and Eurovision are a perfect match. Our city’s diversity and energy make it an ideal host.»
The Countdown Begins
As the deadline approaches, anticipation builds. Each city offers a unique proposition, making the selection process exciting. Whether it’s Geneva’s international prestige, Basel’s creative flair, Bern’s intimate charm, or Zurich’s cosmopolitan vibrancy, the chosen city will bring its unique spirit to Eurovision 2025.
