Zurich Aims to Host Eurovision 2025: Economic Boost and Global Prestige Await

In an exciting development for music enthusiasts and the city of Zurich, the Municipal Council has passed two motions to submit a bid for hosting the Eurovision Song Contest 2025. This decision, propelled by the Social Democratic Party of Switzerland (SP) and the Green Liberal Party of Switzerland (GLP), highlights the potential economic and promotional benefits that such a prestigious event could bring to the city.

A Unified Push for Eurovision

On Wednesday, the motions received approval from the Municipal Council, showcasing significant political support. Marco Denoth, a council member from SP, expressed the collective enthusiasm: “We want to show that the Council is behind the event.” The SP and GLP underscored the positive economic impact and the extensive global exposure Zurich could gain from hosting Eurovision.

However, not all parties were in favour. The Swiss People’s Party (SVP) opposed the motions, labelling Eurovision as «chauvinistic.» Despite this opposition, the proposal now advances to the Zurich City Council, where the final decision will be made. Encouragingly, Mayor Corine Mauch (SP) and the city council are reportedly supportive of the bid.

Eurovision 2025: Switzerland’s Turn in the Spotlight

Switzerland will host Eurovision 2025 following the victory of Swiss artist Nemo with «The Code.» This win marks Switzerland’s third triumph in the competition, following victories in 1956 and 1988. Zurich is among several Swiss cities vying for the honour, with Geneva and Basel already confirmed as contenders. Cities have until the end of June to submit their bids to SSR SRG for assessment.

St. Gallen Bows Out

Contrasting with Zurich’s ambitions, the city of St. Gallen has announced it will not bid to host Eurovision 2025. After thorough consideration, St. Gallen concluded it could not meet the extensive requirements. The city’s statement highlighted the significant financial and logistical demands, including a lack of suitable venue capacity and hotel accommodations within the necessary travel times.

The comprehensive requirements outlined for the host city, such as ensuring security, city branding, energy supply, waste management, and transportation services, proved too challenging. Additionally, the high costs, estimated between 30 and 40 million francs, were a major deterrent, as a substantial portion would need to be publicly funded. The city also cited potential disruptions to local events and economic activities as critical factors in its decision.
