PBS Unveils New Rules for Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2025: Who Will Represent Malta in Basel?

PBS, the Maltese national broadcaster, has officially announced the key details for the upcoming Malta Eurovision Song Contest (MESC) 2025, setting the stage for another thrilling competition that will determine who will fly the Maltese flag at the Eurovision Song Contest in Basel next year. With excitement building, here’s everything you need to know about the latest edition of this iconic contest.
Fresh Guidelines for Artists and Composers
The submission window for artists eager to participate will open from November 18 to 29, 2024, giving Maltese talent a tight window to showcase their creativity. One of the most crucial rules is that all artists must hold Maltese citizenship. If the act includes more than one person, the lead artist must be Maltese. Songwriters and composers, however, can be from any nationality, opening up opportunities for international collaborations.
But here’s the kicker—Sarah Bonnici, the winner of the MESC 2024, is barred from competing this time around as a main artist, leaving the playing field wide open for fresh talent to step forward.
What About the Songs?
Submissions must be original compositions that haven’t been publicly released or performed before November 30, 2024. Artists are allowed to submit multiple entries, but they will face stiff competition, as only 24 songs will be selected to advance to the semi-final stages.
The Road to Eurovision 2025
The semi-finals, set for February 4 and 6, 2025, will feature 24 entries in total, split evenly between two shows. The winners of these semi-finals, determined through a mix of jury and public voting, will move on to the grand finale.
The final showdown on February 8 will see the top 16 performances battling it out for the prestigious title. Once again, a combination of jury scores and public votes will decide which song and artist will represent Malta at Eurovision 2025.
With live audiences expected for all three shows, the atmosphere promises to be electric as Malta takes another step closer to Eurovision glory. Will a new rising star emerge to carry the Maltese banner to Basel?
