Sanremo 2025: Last-Minute Changes, a Shocking Withdrawal, and New Eurovision Rules

With just days to go before the curtain rises on Sanremo 2025, Italy’s most iconic music festival is once again at the centre of controversy. What was shaping up to be an electrifying edition has taken an unexpected turn following the surprise withdrawal of Emis Killa and new regulations affecting Italy’s Eurovision representative. Artistic director Carlo Conti has made crucial decisions that could shake up the competition.

Emis Killa Bows Out of Sanremo 2025

The departure of Emis Killa has been one of the most talked-about developments of the day. While the rapper has remained tight-lipped about his reasons, his name has recently been linked to an investigation into ultra football groups in Milan. Reports from Corriere della Sera suggest he has been handed a three-year stadium ban, though he insists he has no ties to any illegal activity.

With his exit, organizers have opted not to introduce a replacement, leaving the final line-up at 29 artists instead of the original 30.

Eurovision 2025: New Rules and Stricter Selection Process

Another major announcement came in the form of an updated rulebook concerning Eurovision. Until now, Sanremo’s winner automatically secured a spot in the European competition, as Italy is part of the Big Five. However, following recent controversies—including the 2022 voting scandal and Israel’s highly debated participation in 2024—the EBU has tightened its regulations.

The key change is that if Sanremo’s winner does not meet EBU requirements, RAI will have the authority to select another representative based on the festival’s ranking. Additionally, all artists hoping to compete in Eurovision must now sign a formal document agreeing to abide by contest regulations, including the Code of Conduct and Duty of Care Guidance.

An Unpredictable Sanremo

These new rules inject even more uncertainty into the competition. Winning Sanremo is no longer a guaranteed ticket to Basel 2025, and any failure to comply could shake up the outcome. With last-minute withdrawals, scandals, and stricter regulations, this edition promises high drama right until the grand finale.
