Will Basel Bring Eurovision to Switzerland? Citizens to Decide in High-Stakes Referendum

Basel’s dream to host the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) in 2025 faces a decisive moment as residents prepare to cast their votes this November. Following Swiss singer Nemo’s triumphant win at Eurovision 2024 in Malmö, Switzerland secured hosting rights, and the city of Basel emerged as the chosen venue, endorsed by the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (SRG) and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). But with CHF 34.9 million in expenses on the line, a referendum could either greenlight Basel’s grand vision or force significant cutbacks.
For local officials, this event is seen as a unique opportunity for Basel to shine on the world stage. The Grand Council has approved the expenditure, with a commitment to making Eurovision 2025 unforgettable, from the main St. Jakobshalle venue to the additional “Arena Plus” fan zone at St. Jakob Park. A week-long line-up of public viewings, cultural performances, and vibrant gatherings across the city, including Eurovision Village, is planned to bring fans and locals together.
The government, keen to highlight the contest’s benefits, has underscored the potential economic and cultural gains for Basel. Expected to attract up to 180 million television viewers, Eurovision offers Basel an unparalleled chance to promote itself internationally. “The Eurovision Song Contest is a rare and prestigious opportunity for Basel to strengthen its image and attract global attention,” the council stated in a recent appeal, officially endorsing a “yes” vote.
Still, not everyone is convinced. Opponents of the referendum have voiced concerns over taxpayer spending, arguing the allocated budget could be better spent on more pressing issues. The referendum petition, which reached the required 3,912 signatures, called the event an “unnecessary burden” and criticized the budget as wasteful.
Basel residents will face a straightforward question in November: «Do you approve the Grand Council resolution of 11 September 2024 regarding the authorization of expenditure for the staging of the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) 2025 in Basel?»
Should voters reject the proposal, the SRG may be forced to consider alternate scenarios, ranging from a severely pared-down production to potentially moving the event entirely. A “no” vote could mean a Eurovision stripped of its surrounding festivities, impacting local businesses and tourism, and leading to a missed opportunity for international recognition.
With Basel’s future on the Eurovision map in their hands, citizens will ultimately decide whether to say yes to an unforgettable moment or steer Eurovision 2025 in a different direction.
