San Marino Plays Coy with Eurovision 2026 – But Says Yes to Junior ESC

San Marino, the tiny republic that’s made a big splash on the Eurovision stage, is at it again – but this time, it’s playing hard to get. Roberto Sergio, ever the diplomatic General Director of San Marino tv, has confirmed that San Marino will join the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2025 in Tbilisi this December. But when it comes to Eurovision 2026, the answer is… well, a very polite “we’ll see.”
According to Sergio, the San Marino Song Contest has been nothing short of a PR jackpot – over 250 million contacts across Europe since the whole operation kicked off in Sanremo and climaxed with their Eurovision appearance. Not bad for a country smaller than most UK shopping malls.
Voting Drama: Small Nations Aren’t Amused
Of course, no Eurovision story is complete without a little drama. Sergio didn’t hold back when mentioning the “constructive debates” with the EBU over jury and televoting rules. Translation: small countries like San Marino are tired of being overshadowed by Eurovision giants. “They’ve promised new voting rules for 2026,” Sergio said, adding that the conversations are ongoing – which is politician-speak for “we’re not there yet.”
Junior ESC: A Strategic Flirtation
Calling their participation in Junior Eurovision “a sign of goodwill,” Sergio hinted that San Marino’s presence in Tbilisi might serve as a prequel to their Eurovision 2026 return. The representative for Junior ESC will be revealed in September, but whether this is the first step towards another big Eurovision appearance or just a clever PR move remains to be seen.
Because if there’s one thing San Marino knows, it’s how to stay in the headlines – even when saying “maybe.”
