Pippo Baudo, Italian TV Icon, Dies Aged 89

Giuseppe “Pippo” Baudo, the legendary Italian TV presenter affectionately known as “Superpippo,” has passed away aged 89. His death in Rome on 16 August 2025, reportedly due to a heart attack, marks the end of one of television’s most enduring careers.

Six Decades of Stardom

Born on 7 June 1936 in Militello in Val di Catania, Baudo studied law before gravitating towards the performing arts—piano in hand, he launched a showbiz career that would define Italian television for generations.

His early success began with the hit music show Settevoci (1966–70), followed by cult favourites such as Canzonissima, Fantastico, Domenica In, Serata d’onore, and Novecento. But it was the Sanremo Festival, one of them with Michelle Hunzinker, which he hosted a remarkable 13 times, that truly cemented his legacy.

A Storied Legacy

Often wearing the affectionate nickname “Superpippo” like a badge of honour, Baudo was more than a host—he was a cultural institution. Even in later years, he remained a respected figure in Italian media, appearing in specials commemorating the RAI’s 70th anniversary and sending heartfelt messages to the Eurovision community.
