Is Eleni Foureira Saying Goodbye to Eurovision? The Diva Drops a Bombshell

In a move that’s sure to shock Eurovision fans across the continent, Eleni Foureira, the beloved runner-up of Eurovision 2018, has hinted she might be closing the door on her Eurovision journey.
During a recent performance in Thessaloniki, Eleni Foureira sat down for an interview with Tasos Rizopoulos at the Greek radio station Cosmoradio 95.1. The conversation quickly turned to her memorable Eurovision moments and her thoughts on possibly returning to the competition.
Reflecting on her latest performance at the Eurovision event in Malmö, Foureira said, «It felt like I was competing in Eurovision all over again! This time it was much more relaxed, without the pressure… It’s very stressful for the young contestants. As artists, we are not meant to compete. We are meant to create from our soul. When that pressure comes in, it’s very difficult to cope. So, I was much more at ease, I didn’t have anything to prove.»
When asked if she would consider competing in Eurovision again, Foureira delivered a surprising answer: «I don’t know if I have anything better to give to Eurovision.» This statement might disappoint her legions of fans across Europe, but she quickly reassured them, adding, «Never say never, maybe an astonishing song will come along, and I’ll want to do it again. So, we’ll see.»
Eleni Foureira stormed into the Eurovision spotlight in 2018, narrowly missing out on the top spot to Israel’s Netta Barzilai with her hit song «Fuego.» Although she had been trying to make her mark on Eurovision since 2010, it was «Fuego» that catapulted her to Eurovision stardom and made her a sought-after figure in subsequent competitions.
Foureira’s 2019 appearance at the Eurovision Song Contest in Tel Aviv, where she performed a medley including Verka Serduchka’s «Dancing Lasha Tumbai,» is still fondly remembered. Despite it being five years since then, the Swedish production team once again requested her presence this year to perform the hit that turned her into a Eurovision icon in 2018.
Her journey with Eurovision has been a long and passionate one. Starting in 2010, Foureira vied to represent Greece in Oslo, finishing second in the Greek national selection. After unsuccessful attempts with Greece in subsequent years, the offer came from Cyprus in 2018. She became the surprise sensation in Lisbon, clinching second place with «Fuego,» the highest position Cyprus has ever achieved in the contest. The song remains a fan favourite to this day.
Eleni Foureira’s success and enduring popularity in Eurovision is further evidenced by her guest appearances over the years. In 2019, she wowed the audience in Tel Aviv with her rendition of «Dancing Lasha Tumbai,» and this year, she once again dazzled fans with «Fuego» during the opening act in Malmö.
While Foureira’s comments might suggest a possible farewell, her closing words leave a glimmer of hope for her fans: «Never say never.» So, for now, we can only wait and see if another fiery hit will reignite her Eurovision journey.
