Charlotte Perrelli Eyes Spain’s Eurovision Crown – Marbella, Melodifestivalen, and a Mediterranean Dream

Charlotte Perrelli wants to represent Spain at the Eurovision song contest

After years of glitter, key changes and pyrotechnics, Swedish Eurovision icon Charlotte Perrelli may be swapping Stockholm for Seville (well, figuratively). In a recent interview with the Swedish newspaper, Expressen, the two-time Melodifestivalen winner has made her intentions clear: if the song is right, she’s ready to fly the Spanish flag at Eurovision.

Yes, you read that correctly. The woman behind Sweden’s 1999 Eurovision victory with Take Me to Your Heaven has her sights set on representing Spain, her adopted homeland. And why not? Perrelli has been living in Marbella for the past two years – long enough to soak up the sun, the sangría, and apparently, a new sense of national allegiance.

From Melodifestivalen to Benidorm Fest?

Charlotte hasn’t been idle under the Andalusian sun. According to her own words, she already has several songwriters working on potential entries for her. And she’s openly admitted that Benidorm Fest, Spain’s selection format for Eurovision, is “definitely interesting”.

And here’s the kicker: Spain is part of the ‘Big Five’, meaning the country is automatically qualified for the Eurovision Grand Final. As Charlotte cheekily notes, «If Sweden were to win Eurovision the year before, and I then compete for Spain in a Eurovision hosted in Sweden? I’d die. What a dream!”

Dramatic? Maybe. But hey, this is Eurovision – subtlety was never in the rulebook.

A (Very Swedish) Spanish Affair

Eurovision fans will remember Charlotte’s last appearance at Melodifestivalen in 2021 with Still Young, where she finished eighth. But clearly, she’s still got that competitive fire—and now, it’s wearing a mantilla and humming a flamenco beat.

Could we see Charlotte stepping onto the Benidorm Fest stage, with a dramatic ballad or a Latin pop banger, shouting “¡Viva España!” with the conviction of a Eurovision veteran? Stranger things have happened – remember when a Ukrainian drag queen nearly won for San Marino? (OK, that didn’t happen… yet.)

Spain + Sweden = Eurovision Gold?

The idea of a Swedish Eurovision champion representing Spain, in a Eurovision possibly held in Sweden, might sound like an identity crisis to some, but to us it’s just another chapter in the gloriously bizarre novel that is Eurovision.

Whether Spain opens its arms to Charlotte Perrelli remains to be seen, but one thing’s certain: if this diva lands in Benidorm Fest, the game is on. She’s got the voice, the experience and, let’s be honest, probably a better high-kick than half the Spanish selection.

Stay tuned, Europe – la Perrelli española might just be coming for you.
