“A Hard Decision, but the Right One”: Moldova Bows Out of Eurovision 2025

On 22 January 2025, Moldova’s Eurovision journey took an unexpected turn. Corneliu Durnescu, the director of Moldova 1, and Daniela Crudu, head of the Moldovan delegation, announced that the country would not participate in this year’s competition. The decision, though surprising, was described as a necessary step in response to current challenges.

This year’s national selection revealed a concerning drop in artistic quality and audience interest. It’s a wake-up call that we need significant reforms to ensure Moldova is represented with pride,” Durnescu stated.

The withdrawal comes amidst financial and artistic concerns. While Eurovision participation demands considerable investment — from organizing a national final to covering promotion and travel costs — the EBU’s participation fee of €21,486 was far from the inflated figures circulating in public discourse.

Despite their absence as competitors, Moldovan audiences can still tune in to watch both semi-finals and the grand final from Basel. Meanwhile, the funds initially allocated to Eurovision will be redirected towards projects aimed at fostering local talent.

Daniela Crudu expressed optimism for the future: “We will come back stronger. This hiatus is an opportunity for our artists to prepare better, and when we return, we’ll do so with renewed vigour and purpose.”
