Sanremo 2025 DOMINATES ratings, but is it real success or lack of competition?

Last night, the second evening of the 75th edition of Sanremo took centre stage, bringing together Italy’s top music stars in the legendary song contest that will determine the country’s Eurovision 2025 representative. Hosted by the ever-charismatic Carlo Conti, the show featured co-hosts Nino Frassica, Cristiano Malgioglio, and model Bianca Balti, whose courageous battle against ovarian cancer has made her a symbol of resilience in this edition.
With a staggering 11.7 million viewers and a 65% audience share, Sanremo once again proved its dominance in Italian television. However, were these figures truly earned, or did the lack of competition play a role? Unlike other countries, where national selections fight for primetime supremacy, Sanremo enjoys an untouchable status—its biggest rival, Mediaset, chooses to step aside, airing reruns or old films instead of challenging Rai 1’s juggernaut. Interestingly, on the rare occasions it has dared to counter-programme, Mediaset emerged victorious, like in 2004, when Big Brother topped the third night of Sanremo, or in 2008, when an episode of I Cesaroni outperformed the youth final.
🎤 The competition heats up!
Musically, 15 of the 29 competing acts took the stage, along with the semi-finalists of the Nuove Proposte category. The two artists advancing to the final are Alex Wyse and Settembre, after defeating Vale LP, Lil Jolie, and Maria Tomba. In addition, it featured the presence of Damiano David, former frontman of Måneskin, as a guest star
Meanwhile, the top five fan and radio-favourite artists of the night were:
🔹 Giorgia
🔹 Simone Cristicchi
🔹 Achille Lauro
🔹 Lucio Corsi
🔹 Fedez
Tonight, the remaining 14 contestants will perform, the Nuove Proposte final will take place, and Duran Duran will take the stage as special guests. Adding to the glamour, Miriam Leone, Katia Follesa, and Elettra Lamborghini will join Carlo Conti as co-hosts for what promises to be a spectacular night.
