Switzerland Never Wanted to Withdraw: The Truth Behind the Eurovision 2024 Rumours

Yves Schifferle, the head of the Swiss delegation for the Eurovision Song Contest, has categorically denied rumors that Switzerland was close to withdrawing from the 2024 competition. Speaking to Blick, Schifferle made it clear that the idea of pulling out «was not up for debate.«

Recently, speculation arose that Switzerland, along with Norway, Portugal, and the United Kingdom, was considering withdrawing from Eurovision due to internal crises and disagreements with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). Reports suggested that emergency meetings were held during the contest, adding fuel to the fire.

However, Schifferle clarified that while meetings did occur, they were not led by the Swiss broadcaster but by their artist representative, Nemo. «Some acts have sought talks with the EBU regarding certain etiquette in the backstage area,» Schifferle explained. This followed Nemo, the performer of «The Code,» and other artists voicing concerns about the organisation and treatment at the event.

During Saturday’s dress rehearsal, Nemo was one of several artists who could not participate in the flag parade, further sparking speculation. An official statement indicated that the singer was «emotionally exhausted.» Additionally, Magnus Børmark, guitarist of the Norwegian band Gåte, mentioned that some artists missed the parade because they were in an emergency meeting with the EBU.

Schifferle’s comments suggest that any tensions were driven by the artists rather than the broadcasters. This contrasts with a recent report by Norwegian newspaper VG, which claimed that Switzerland and five other countries agreed to compete in Eurovision 2024 at the last minute.

Despite these challenges, Switzerland not only stayed in the competition but emerged victorious. Nemo secured Switzerland’s first Eurovision win since Celine Dion in 1988 with their song «The Code.» The country is now gearing up to host Eurovision 2025, demonstrating their dedication and resiliencet in the European music scene.

Schifferle’s transparency about the rumours and the determination of Swiss artists show that Switzerland never intended to withdraw. This success reaffirms their commitment to Eurovision and sets the stage for future participations filled with enthusiasm and talent.
