Slovenian Eurovision Selection Process Faces Scrutiny Over Transparency Issues

In a recent investigation, the Anti-Corruption Commission (KPK) examined the selection process of Slovenia’s representative for Eurovision 2024, revealing significant transparency issues. While no favouritism or undue influence was confirmed, the commission identified several procedural concerns and issued multiple recommendations for future improvements.

No Evidence of Favouritism

The investigation was initiated following several complaints received in January 2024, alleging irregularities in the selection of Raiven as Slovenia’s representative for Eurovision 2024, held in Sweden. RTV Slovenia managed the selection process. According to the KPK, the investigation did not confirm any allegations of bias or influence. The commission stated, «Based on the obtained data and statements, there is no evidence supporting the claims of conflicts of interest among the committee members. Likewise, there were no pressures or influences detected regarding the selection.»

Transparency Concerns

Despite the absence of proven favouritism, the KPK highlighted transparency issues within the selection process. The commission noted, «The procedure for selecting Slovenia’s Eurovision representative was conducted non-transparently. The regulations governing the selection process were neither publicly nor preemptively disclosed. Furthermore, these regulations were undated, and RTV Slovenia could not provide documentation to verify their creation date.»

Recommendations for RTV Slovenia

The commission’s findings prompted several recommendations to RTV Slovenia. These include the immediate public disclosure of all selection documentation and the establishment of clear rules at the outset of the selection process. Additionally, the commission advised formalizing the rule-making procedure, specifying who adopts the rules and when. The confidentiality of the voting process by the selection committees must also be ensured.

RTV Slovenia’s Response

RTV Slovenia responded promptly, acknowledging the conclusion of the KPK’s investigation. They assured compliance with the recommendations, stating, «As always, RTV Slovenia will strictly adhere to the official institution’s recommendations.«

This investigation followed the resignation of Vanja Vardjan, the head of RTV Slovenia’s Entertainment Program, in January. Vardjan stepped down to allow an impartial investigation into the Eurovision selection process, reflecting the broadcaster’s commitment to transparency and fairness in its operations.
