Record-Breaking Junior Eurovision: Ukraine Receives Over 300 National Selection Entries
In a dazzling display of youthful ambition and musical talent, Suspilne Broadcasting has received a record-breaking 309 entries for the National Selection for Junior Eurovision 2024. Among these, a staggering 272 were solo performers. The application window, which ran from 5 June to 3 July, has now closed, and the anticipation is palpable.
Although an original song was not a mandatory requirement this year — participants only needed to submit two cover songs and a personal introduction video to qualify — about 19% of the applicants also provided an original composition for consideration. Interestingly, 83% of the applications were from girls, leaving boys to make up the remaining 17%.
«48 Hours of Joy and Surprise»
Svitlana Tarabarova, the musical producer for Ukraine’s Junior Eurovision 2024 National Selection, shared her excitement after reviewing the entries: «48 hours of happiness, joy, interesting discoveries, and unexpected moments. Sometimes shock, sometimes admiration, but always about music, always about love. That’s how my last two days of selection and reviewing the record-breaking 309 entries went. Goosebumps anticipating the achievements that await our children.»
The Path to Stardom
This year, the longlist will feature no more than 15 participants, set to be announced by 25 July on Suspilne’s platforms. Those who make it to the longlist will attend a summer «star school,» where they will receive coaching and training from industry professionals. Hosted at the Ukrainian Radio Recording House, these young talents will enhance their skills in singing, choreography, and acting.
Svitlana Tarabarova and songwriter Yevhen Triplov will be responsible for crafting original songs for the six finalists emerging from the «star school.» Additionally, director and creative producer Yevhen Kot will oversee the visual aspects of the National Selection and stage performances.
A Glimpse of Glory
The final of the National Selection for Junior Eurovision 2024 will take place in September, formatted as a televised concert. This year marks a historic moment as the 22nd Junior Eurovision Song Contest will be held in Spain for the first time. The grand finale is set for 16 November at the Caja Mágica arena in Madrid.
Last year, Ukraine was represented by 9-year-old Anastasiya Dymyid with her song «Kvitka,» written by Svitlana Tarabarova. Anastasiya brought Ukraine its best result since 2018, securing 5th place with a total of 128 points: 45 from the jury and an impressive 83 from the audience, landing her in 3rd place in the televote.
As the young talents prepare for their chance to shine on the international stage, one thing is clear: Ukraine’s future in music is as bright and vibrant as ever. With over 300 eager voices ready to be heard, the competition promises to be nothing short of spectacular. Let the melodies begin!
