Melody’s ‘Esa Diva’ gets a makeover, but is it enough?

Just moments ago, the revamped version of «Esa Diva» was released—the song with which Melody will try to fly the Spanish flag at Eurovision 2024 in Basel from 13 to 17 May. The makeover comes courtesy of IGHTY4, Rick Parkhouse, and George Tizzard, who worked on it at London’s Red Triangle Records after the track faced harsh criticism following its victory at Benidorm Fest.

The music video opens in black and white with Melody sitting in a car. She steps out, struts down a red carpet like a classic Hollywood star, and then—bam!—the colour kicks in, along with a high-energy dance sequence. The video ends with Melody in a dressing room, writing on a mirror with lipstick: «Melody, esa diva.»

Musically, the revamp starts with a more symphonic feel before diving into techno beats just before the chorus—a fusion of classic and modern sounds aimed at winning over Eurovision fans.

Despite the revamp, a new choreographer, and fresh dancers, the odds remain unimpressed. Spain has climbed from 33rd to 31st place in the betting rankings, a slight improvement but still far from reassuring. Will the live performance turn things around? Time will tell.
