A glance at the past: the history of Melodifestivalen
Melodifestivalen, affectionately known as «Mello,» began its journey in 1959, just four years after Eurovision made its debut. Over the years, it has been the launching pad for artists who would go on to achieve international success, most notably ABBA, who won Eurovision in 1974 with “Waterloo.” Since then, the festival has become a crucial platform for many Swedish musicians’ careers.
Through time, Melodifestivalen has transformed into a six-week event, with semi-finals taking place across the country. This expansion has allowed more cities to participate in the event, giving fans throughout Sweden the opportunity to enjoy the competition live. At the same time, it has provided artists with greater exposure and fostered a close relationship between the public and the contestants.
This year promises to be as special as ever. With excitement running high and the promise of fresh and thrilling performances, Melodifestivalen 2025 is set to be one of the most memorable editions in its storied history.
