Latvia Considers Eurovision Withdrawal Following 2024 Festival Controversy

The controversy surrounding the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, held on May 11 in Malmö, Sweden, continues to generate repercussions. After disputes over flags and the expulsion of the Netherlands, San Marino and Latvia are now evaluating their participation in future editions of the contest.

Latvia, which competed with Dons and his song «Hollow» and finished in a commendable 16th place, is seriously reconsidering its presence in the next edition of the festival, which will be held in a yet-to-be-determined Swiss city.

A Popular Petition

The platform ManaBalss has collected over 11,300 signatures from Latvian citizens supporting Latvia’s withdrawal from Eurovision, according to the «Baltic News Network.» Since the petition has surpassed 10,000 signatures, it will now be presented to the Latvian parliament, Saeima, for review. The petition’s author, Kristaps Bogdanovičs, argues that the funds allocated to Eurovision should be redirected to sports.

“I call for an end to Latvia’s participation in Eurovision. It is doubtful that this event significantly contributes to Latvia’s image and reputation. The people who participate there tend to behave obscenely, and this is considered the norm,” states Bogdanovičs.

Arguments for Withdrawal

Proponents of the initiative argue that European countries abstain from Eurovision for various reasons, including financial issues. They believe Latvia should better invest its limited public resources in areas with clear benefits, such as sports. “It is unacceptable that the Biathlon Federation has to raise donations for the World Championship, which is undoubtedly more important than Eurovision,” they emphasize.

An Imminent Decision

Latvia’s potential withdrawal from Eurovision adds to the uncertainty surrounding the festival following the 2024 incidents. If the parliament decides in favor of the petition, Latvia will join the list of countries that have opted not to participate in the contest for financial or other reasons.

Meanwhile, the Eurofan community and the media are keenly awaiting the final decision from the Saeima. Latvia’s possible absence from the festival could mark a turning point in the Baltic country’s participation in one of Europe’s most significant musical events.
