«Joost Klein’s Troubling Behavior No Surprise,» Reveals ‘Europapa’ Director Amid Eurovision Scandal
In a recent podcast appearance, filmmaker Véras Fawaz shed light on the tumultuous experience of working with Dutch artist Joost Klein during the production of the music video for Europapa. Fawaz, known for directing Stiekem by Maan and Goldband, shared his personal challenges, stating, «Making the video for Europapa cost me about a month and a half of my life.«
Fawaz didn’t hold back in describing the difficulties he faced, pointing out Klein’s unpredictable behaviour and intense nature. «Joost Klein’s troubling behavior no surprise. Joost sometimes finds it difficult to interact with people. He lashed out at my assistant several times on set. Throughout the process, I had numerous arguments with him. Only a few hours before releasing the video did he finally tell me he liked it. Before that, it was always: ‘This is crap, I don’t feel it, I’m not releasing this.»
Control Freak Tendencies
One of the most startling revelations was Klein’s decision to add a text message at the end of the video, which read ‘from me to my parents,’ without consulting Fawaz. «We had one rule: no texts in the video. When I found out the text would be included after the video was finished, I felt it was ethically wrong to do that behind my back. I told him as much. However, this control freak nature is both his greatest strength and his biggest weakness,» Fawaz noted.
Eurovision Disqualification
Klein’s turbulent journey didn’t end there. Last month in Malmö, he was disqualified from the Eurovision final following an incident with a camerawoman backstage. The investigation’s outcome remains pending, as Swedish authorities need to conduct additional witness interviews in the Netherlands. Klein’s management has yet to respond to requests for comment.
A New Beginning
Despite the controversy, Klein has bounced back by releasing a new song titled Luchtballon, an adaptation of Richard Marx’s 1989 hit Right Here Waiting. The release subtly nods to his Eurovision experience, marking a new chapter in his musical career.
