Joost Klein Breaks Silence After Dropped Investigation: ‘I Lived with Uncertainty Every Day’

Joost Klein, the Dutch artist at the centre of a controversy during this year’s Eurovision, has finally spoken out following the Swedish authorities’ decision to drop the investigation against him. Klein, who was accused of threatening a camerawoman backstage during the competition, expressed his relief but also his frustration over the ordeal, which led to his disqualification from the Eurovision final.

In an emotional Instagram post on Monday evening, Klein shared his thoughts on the difficult months that followed the incident. “Why did we have to wait so long for an answer? Every day, I felt uncertain, even though I knew the truth. There was never any reason for this case,” he wrote, reflecting the toll the uncertainty had taken on him.

The incident in question, which took place in May, saw Klein excluded from the Eurovision final after allegations surfaced that he had acted aggressively towards a camerawoman. However, on Monday, Swedish prosecutors announced that they had closed the investigation due to a lack of evidence. Despite this, the camerawoman involved is reportedly considering an appeal against the decision.

Earlier that day, Klein’s manager had conveyed the artist’s relief and happiness at the news. But Klein’s own statement delved deeper into the emotional strain he had been under. “I love performing around the world, but something didn’t feel right,” Klein admitted, referring to his Eurovision experience with his song «Europapa.» “We all need to look out for each other. Love always wins. Even though I lost all hope, now I’m back!

In response to the development, Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS reiterated their belief that Klein’s disqualification was “unnecessary and disproportionate from the start.” The broadcaster has called for an urgent meeting with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the organization behind Eurovision, to discuss what they see as an unjust exclusion. The EBU, however, has maintained its position, stating that it fully supports the decision to disqualify Klein.

As the dust begins to settle, Joost Klein’s words serve as a poignant reminder of the personal impact such controversies can have on artists. For Klein, at least, this chapter may finally be closing, but the broader implications for Eurovision and its participants remain a topic of intense debate.
