Eurovision Dreams Dashed: EBU Rejects Kosovo’s Participation Request for 2025
In a disappointing turn of events, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has denied Kosovo’s application to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2025. Despite Kosovo‘s national broadcaster, Radio Television of Kosovo (RTK), sending an official letter to Eurovision’s Executive Supervisor expressing their eagerness, the EBU cited political reasons for the rejection, reiterating that full membership in the union is a prerequisite for contest participation. This decision comes as a blow to Kosovo’s aspirations for European integration and recognition on an international stage.
Kosovo had been gearing up for potential Eurovision participation with the establishment of its own national song contest, “RTK Festivali i Këngës,” earlier this year. The competition, aimed at promoting local music and selecting a potential Eurovision representative, had completed a successful first edition and was planning a second. Despite these efforts, Kosovo’s Eurovision debut remains uncertain, though it had indirect representation in 2023 when Albina Kelmendi, a Kosovar, represented Albania with her family.
Kosovo’s Eurovision journey reflects its complex international status. Since its declaration of independence from Serbia in 2008, Kosovo has been recognized by 104 countries, including Israel. However, nations like Serbia, Spain, and Russia do not recognize its independence, complicating its efforts to join global organizations and events like Eurovision.

What a pity! The more countries, the better!
