Eurovision Departure: Twan van de Nieuwenhuijzen Moves On, Embraces New Role at NOS Events

Twan van de Nieuwenhuijzen is set to step down from his role as Head of Delegation at AvroTros for the Eurovision Song Contest. Starting mid-August, Van de Nieuwenhuijzen will take on the mantle of Chief Editor at NOS Events, as announced via Instagram on Thursday.

«In the company of familiar faces and new colleagues, working on (live) programmes covering national events, commemorations, and celebrations,» Van de Nieuwenhuijzen shared in his post. «After five years with the Eurovision Song Contest, this wonderful opportunity has come at the perfect moment in my journey. I’m truly thrilled!» In an interview with ANP, Van de Nieuwenhuijzen elaborated that he would be committing to NOS for at least a year in his new role.

In addition to his tenure as delegation head, Van de Nieuwenhuijzen served as chairman of the selection committee and played a pivotal role in the international production teams of the Eurovision Song Contests in Rotterdam (2021), Turin (2022), and Liverpool (2023). Reflecting on his time, he remarked, «After five years, perhaps it’s time to start thinking about something different.»

Investigations

In early June, AvroTros indicated uncertainty regarding the Netherlands’ participation in next year’s Eurovision. The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), responsible for organizing the musical event, must first implement several changes as requested by the Dutch delegation. During this year’s festival in May, the Dutch entry by Joost Klein was disqualified following a backstage incident. Investigations into the matter are ongoing.

Van de Nieuwenhuijzen acknowledges that the «song festival project» at AvroTros is currently on hold and supports the broadcaster’s decision. «Several investigations need to be completed first,» he noted.

AvroTros has confirmed they are not actively seeking a new head of delegation at this time, with future participation considerations taking precedence, according to a spokesperson.

As Van de Nieuwenhuijzen embarks on his new role, the industry eagerly anticipates the impact of his editorial leadership at NOS Events. His transition from Eurovision to a new chapter underscores a commitment to innovation and excellence, leaving an indelible mark on both national and international stages.
