Eurovision 2024: EBU Unveils Comprehensive Review to Secure the Future of the Iconic Contest

The Eurovision Song Contest 2024 dazzled audiences worldwide, reaching over 160 million viewers across 37 public service media markets and engaging millions more through digital channels. As Eurovision approaches its 70th anniversary, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has taken decisive steps to address the challenges of organizing such a globally influential event. In May, the EBU announced an independent review of the 2024 contest held in Malmö, aiming to ensure the ongoing success and unity of the competition.

This extensive review, led by an industry expert, gathered feedback from a wide array of Eurovision stakeholders, including Heads of Delegation, members of the Eurovision Reference Group, and the EBU/ESC core team. Today, the EBU has shared the findings and outlined three key areas of focus to strengthen future contests: EBU Governance and Participation, Safety and Risk Management, and Audience Engagement, Fans and Media.

Strategic Actions for Immediate Implementation

To maintain the contest’s momentum, the EBU has appointed a task force of senior leaders from across its membership to oversee the implementation of changes in these critical areas. The review highlighted the need for enhanced leadership to manage the contest’s scale effectively. Consequently, a new role of ESC Director has been created, reporting to the EBU Deputy Director General and Media Director. This role will streamline the Executive Supervisor’s responsibilities, allowing for a concentrated focus on production, delegation relations, and day-to-day operations, while the ESC Director will oversee strategic planning and execution.

These strategic decisions, made swiftly within six weeks of the 2024 contest, underline the EBU’s commitment to fortifying and sustaining Eurovision. The organization is dedicated to ensuring that Eurovision continues to grow in prominence and remains a beloved event that brings joy to millions around the world.

Focused Areas of Development

  1. EBU Governance and Participation– The focus here is on clarifying the decision-making responsibilities within the EBU Governing Bodies regarding the list of accepted participants. This area will also ensure that a wide range of member opinions are considered and will define the roles and responsibilities of the ESC Core Team and Heads of Delegations, as well as participating artists.
  2. Safety and Risk Management– This involves improving the understanding of ESC rules across all stakeholder groups, with a focus on simplification and improved accessibility. Strengthening crisis management protocols and enhancing security and cybersecurity measures to meet the increased demands are also key priorities.
  3. Audience Engagement, Fans and Media– This area aims to boost collaboration with fan groups, influencers, and media to broaden engagement based on ESC values. Ensuring that Eurovision remains an inclusive show that appeals to a diverse prime-time audience of all ages is paramount.

By addressing these thematic areas, the EBU is committed to ensuring the Eurovision Song Contest continues to evolve and thrive. These initiatives will help secure the future of Eurovision, guaranteeing it remains a celebration of music and unity for generations to come as it approaches its historic 70th anniversary.
