ERT and RIK Distance Themselves from Controversial Eurovision 2024 Statement

In the latest twist of Eurovision 2024, an unsigned statement has been circulating online, reportedly sent by delegation members and artists from this year’s competition. According to ESC Gabe, who exclusively published the statement, neither the Greek broadcaster ERT nor the Cypriot broadcaster RIK are among its signatories.
The statement addresses recent reports about backstage incidents during Eurovision 2024, including allegations of inappropriate behaviour towards the Israeli delegation and the EBU’s decision to relocate them to different backstage areas. ESC Gabe claims the statement has been signed by various delegation members and artists, although the names of these signatories have not been disclosed upon their request. The statement reads:
«Recently, we have seen a series of inaccurate reports about what happened backstage during Eurovision 2024, the alleged behaviour of artists towards the Israeli delegation, and the events surrounding the EBU’s decision to relocate the Israeli delegation to different backstage areas.
We are concerned about the inaccuracies being published. During Eurovision 2024, several artists and national delegations filed complaints with the EBU about inappropriate behaviour and rule violations by members of the Israeli delegation.
We are working with the EBU and expect that these complaints will be duly investigated, in accordance with the EBU officials’ commitments. While the process is ongoing, it would be inappropriate to comment publicly on specific events, but we will do so in due course.»
This statement has sparked significant debate, raising questions about transparency and the handling of backstage incidents. However, ERT and RIK have confirmed they did not sign the document, distancing themselves from the controversy.
The broader Eurovision community now waits to see if other delegations will also deny involvement, as has frequently occurred this year with similar reports, or if some will step forward to confirm their participation in the unsigned statement.
As the situation develops, it highlights the ongoing challenges Eurovision faces in maintaining a harmonious environment among its diverse participants, with the EBU’s role in managing and resolving disputes under scrutiny.
Stay tuned for further updates as we continue to monitor the fallout from this year’s competition and the reactions from various national broadcasters and delegations.
