Denmark Prepares for Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2025: A New Hope Amid a Eurovision Slump

The date is set: March 1, 2025, will see the final of the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix (DMGP), the event that will select Denmark’s next representative for Eurovision. This year, the venue will be the Jyske Bank Boxen stadium in the city of Herning, with a capacity of 12,500 people.

Erik Struve Hansen, director of the DMGP, has expressed his optimism for next year’s Danish music festival: «This year, the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix brought together over a million people for a musical celebration in venues across the country. I hope we can once again bring people together for a festive evening with musical spirit, which in 2025 will take place directly from Boxen in Herning.» He also explained that their aspiration for next year is to «continue with this year’s rhythms and provide the Danes with a great Grand Prix party created by the upcoming artists and hosts, and Boxen can create a good stage for that.»

Tickets to see the DMGP final have been available since May 7, even before Denmark’s representative in Malmö 2024 took the Eurovision stage.

Denmark’s History in Eurovision

Denmark has had a notable presence in the Eurovision Song Contest since its debut in 1957. The country has won the contest three times: in 1963 with Grethe and Jørgen Ingmann and their song «Dansevise,» in 2000 with the Olsen Brothers and «Fly on the Wings of Love,» and most recently in 2013 with Emmelie de Forest and «Only Teardrops.» Despite these successes, Denmark has faced challenges recently.

A Eurovision Slump

In recent editions, Denmark has experienced a slump in Eurovision. The country has failed to qualify for the grand final in the past four years, with 2019 being the last time they reached the final. In 2024, Saba, the winner of DMPG 2024, represented the Scandinavian country with the song «Sand.» Performing in the second semifinal, Saba garnered 36 points from the televote, finishing in 12th place and missing out on the final.

With DMGP 2025, Denmark hopes to reverse this trend and shine once more on the European stage. The choice of Herning and the enthusiasm expressed by the organizers suggest a renewed effort by the country to reclaim its prominent position in Eurovision. The hope is that the next Danish representative, selected in this prestigious event, can break the slump and lead Denmark back to the grand final of the contest.
