Belgium Confirms 2025 Eurovision Participation
Belgium’s Flemish broadcaster, VRT, has confirmed their participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2025, selecting their representative through the national final «Eurosong.» This news was confirmed by VRT’s Eurovision commentator, Peter van de Veire, to the Belgian fan media website Songfestival.be.
Belgium, part of the Netherlands region, alternates between Flemish and French-speaking entrants. This year, it is VRT’s turn to select the Belgian representative. The national final «Eurosong» will serve as the selection medium, following the previous successes of Gustaph, who finished 7th in 2023, and Laura Tesoro, who secured 10th place in 2016. Both artists exceeded expectations, finishing in the top ten, in stark contrast to VRT’s more recent internally selected acts, such as Sennek (2018, who did not qualify) and Hooverphonic (2021, who did not qualify via televote and finished 19th in the Grand Final).
Details about the upcoming national final are still under wraps. The previous edition featured seven artists, each presenting two songs. Each artist then chose one of their songs for the live show, with the winner determined by a 50/50 blend of public vote and jury ranking.
However, the Eurovision journey for Belgium this year has not been without controversy. Rumors have surfaced suggesting that Belgium was penalized for not broadcasting Israel’s performance during the contest. This speculation has added fuel to the ongoing debate about the intersection of politics and the Eurovision Song Contest. The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has not officially commented on these rumors, but the whispers have certainly created a stir within the Eurovision community.
Adding to the turmoil, Thomas Mustin, known as Mustii, who represented Belgium in 2024, failed to reach the Grand Final. Mustii, a fan favorite, finished in 13th place in the semifinal with only 18 points. This unexpected result led to public outcry and disappointment among his supporters. Mustii’s songwriter has expressed frustration, suggesting that the song deserved better recognition and that the outcome did not reflect the effort and quality of the performance.
Belgium’s Eurovision journey continues with anticipation and hope for 2025. With «Eurosong» set to determine the next representative, fans are eagerly awaiting more details and the chance to support their favorite artists in the national selection. Despite the controversies, Belgium remains a dedicated participant in the Eurovision Song Contest, committed to showcasing its musical talent on the international stage.
