AVROTROS Demands Justice After Joost Klein Cleared of Eurovision Song Contest Allegations

In a dramatic twist to one of the most controversial moments in recent Eurovision Song Contest history, Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS has renewed its demands for accountability after the Swedish Public Prosecutor’s Office suspended its investigation into Joost Klein due to lack of evidence. The investigation, which had cast a long shadow over Klein’s participation in the competition, was officially dropped, clearing the artist of any wrongdoing.

From the outset, AVROTROS had vehemently opposed Klein’s disqualification from the Eurovision Song Contest, labelling the decision as «unnecessary and disproportionate.» The broadcaster’s frustration only deepened as the investigation unfolded, culminating in a decisive victory for Klein, but leaving lingering questions about the handling of the entire affair.

«We are still deeply disappointed that the Europa adventure of Joost Klein and of the entire Netherlands was brutally ended in this way,» AVROTROS stated, underscoring the widespread dismay felt across the Dutch music scene.

The next step for AVROTROS is to engage in a high-level meeting with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) to address what it describes as the «unjust disqualification» of Klein. The broadcaster has also expressed its intent to raise additional concerns regarding the backstage environment at the Eurovision Song Contest, which have been detailed in a comprehensive letter of objection that has so far gone unanswered by the EBU.

AVROTROS remains firm in its stance that the Eurovision Song Contest should prioritize the artists and their musical messages, and has made it clear that it expects the EBU to take immediate action. As the dust settles on this chapter of the competition, all eyes are now on the EBU’s next move.
