AVROTROS Calls for ‘Structural Changes’ Before Committing to Eurovision 2025

In a significant development following the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest, Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS has demanded ‘structural changes’ to the organisation of the competition before confirming their participation in next year’s event.
Eurovision 2024: A Historic and Controversial Edition
Almost a month after the Eurovision 2024 edition in Malmö, the event continues to generate intense discussion and scrutiny. The contest, marked by its memorable performances and behind-the-scenes controversies, remains in the spotlight. Recently, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) announced an independent investigation into the backstage working environment, following multiple complaints from various delegations.
AVROTROS Calls for Comprehensive Investigation
AVROTROS has declared its willingness to cooperate with the EBU’s investigation but insists on several critical conditions:
«AVROTROS believes that a broader, in-depth, and genuinely independent investigation is essential to address structural problems. This should encompass not only the organisational practices in Malmö and the EBU but also the independent role and mandate of the Reference Group (the committee of delegates from participating countries), the rules and procedures for complaints, and the increased pressure on artists and delegations leading up to and during the Eurovision Song Contest. These issues should be examined by a recognised and independent research agency,» the broadcaster stated.
Future Participation in Doubt
The Dutch broadcaster has further stated that the Netherlands’ participation in the Eurovision Song Contest remains uncertain. «Our continued participation is contingent upon AVROTROS having confidence that structural changes will be implemented to refocus the contest on the artists and their musical messages.»
Ongoing Investigations
Meanwhile, the Swedish police investigation into the incident involving Dutch artist Joost Klein is still underway, with more information expected to be released in June.
This situation highlights the growing calls for reform within the Eurovision framework, reflecting broader concerns about the pressures and political influences affecting the beloved international competition. As the Eurovision community awaits further developments, all eyes are on how the EBU and national broadcasters will address these pressing issues to ensure a fair and artist-centred contest in 2025.
